IPL – Commercialisation of sports

Sports in India had never been less than a religion especially if one talks about Cricket . T-shirts having a print of one’s national flag was the only identity of a player on the field .  However , since 2008 , the identity of players have changed . Now the t-shirts of the players only expose the names of the sponsors . Now –a-days , cricket is no more a religion , it has become a business named IPL i.e. Indian Premiere League.

Currently IPL is running  its 6th season. As a result, BCCI is expecting a turnover of U.S. $ 1.6 billion  at the end of the season. IPL started on 18 april 2008 and from then it multiplied its profit and popularity much faster than the growth of any kind of fungus. It became popular to such an extent that in 2008,the matches were broadcasted live on you tubeand final four matches were even screened in 3D across movie hall in India .The 2008 match between the Royal Challengers and Kolkata knight Riders was seen by 40,000 spectators ,14.4 million and millions across the globe .

Commercialisation of cricket has popularized to such an extent that much of ounger generation believes that cricket is their national sport. Commercialisation not only effects the credibility of cricket but also harms the sincerity of the players . Towards the end of its 5 th season the league faced many hurdles including spot-fixing . In a sting operation conducted by a local tv channel India Tv  5 players were caught in it . In IPL a huge amount of money is paid to the players . As a result, players show more enthuthiasm in IPL rather than in International level matches . Consequently it led to more injuries and other fitness problems. According to the  the former England captain Nasser Hussain,    "India is playing too much of cricket. The players went straight to IPL from the World Cup and some of them had to be rested for the West Indies tour. Obviously, Zaheer arrived here bit undercooked and a bit unfit." As a result, the performance of Indian players is getting effected.  Even in 2011 due to playing in IPL, majority of Indian players were injured and failed to perform well in the series played with England in which India defeated very badly. Here because of money one lost its prestige.

IPL not only led commercialisation through legal means but also through illegal methods too. According to a Bussiness daily “ The bet in IPL will be worth of rs 40,000 crore,  which  is a significant rise of 25% than the previous edition . how much betting industry operated from Portugal can be calculated by the fact that inaugural edition of IPL had a bet of rs 6,000crore. According to economics Times , “Hyderabad is the IPL’s betting ‘capital’ as 20 %  bet originates from there only..
